Your guide to buying
Health Insurance!
|
#1.
PPO plans are very
popular now.
|
#2. PPO plans can be divided into five
categories.
-
Plans with no
deductibles. Doctor visits range
from $30 to $50 copays per visit. Other
services are usually paid by you at 40%
until you reach the out of pocket
maximum. One example; is Health Net's
simple value plans.
-
PPO plans with
deductibles range from $500 to $5000
dollars----- once you reach the
deductible (what you have to pay before
the insurance company begins paying)
Then usually you pay 30% of the
remaining bill until you reach the out
of pocket maximum. Sometimes these plans
have separate low copayments for
doctors office visits and prescriptions.
All of the insurance companies have
these types of PPO plans.
-
Once you pay the
deductible, your covered 100%.
Some new PPO plans have been introduced
that once you reach the deductible for
the calendar year, the insurance company
pays 100% of all on-going medical bills.
Usually you must pay for all medical
services until you have reached the
deductible. Some do offer low copayments for prescriptions and doctor
office visits. Examples; of these plans
are the Blue Shield Essential Plans,
the Blue Cross $3500 Deductible
Plan, the Health Net's Simple
Choice Plans, and the Blue Cross
Tonik Plans.
-
Some PPO plans include Maternity Benefits and some
exclude these benefits.
-
HSA Type Plans: These
are usually high deductible PPO plans
that allow you to set up a special
savings account; to have monies set
aside on a tax favored basis to cover
your deductible. These are called
"Health Savings Accounts." All the
Insurance companies have HSA type plans.
(Blue Cross has a HSA plan called "Lumenos"
that offers 100% coverage for preventive
care.)
|
#3. Some plans are designed for young and healthy people.
-
These PPO plans also have deductibles, but once you reach
the deductible, then the insurance company will pay 100% for all
on-going medical services. These plans have office visit co
payments that range from $20, $30, and $40 dollars. Generic
drugs are covered with a $10 copay. Also, very minimum dentist
and vision plans are included. Examples of these plans are the
Blue Shield Essential Plan and the Blue Cross Tonik Plan.
|
#4.
HMO Plans:
-
With HMO Plans, you receive the most
coverage for your money. You will pay less out of pocket for any
type of testing and/or hospital care. Examples; of HMO plans can
be found with Blue Cross, Blue Shield, PacifiCare and Health
Net.--- "Blue Cross has a HMO Plan called "-Select HMO-." It offers a
$25.00 doctors office visit copay and after you pay a hospital
$250.00 copay per day for the first 4 days, you are then
covered 100%. The "Select HMO" plan does have fewer doctors on
its provider list, but your doctor may just be on it. And still
there are plenty of doctors to choose, even if you don't have
one---."
